Barotrauma (BT)

A condition caused by a change in ambient pressure in a gas-filled space; if gas is trapped in a closed space within the body, the gas will be compressed as a diver descends and will expand as a diver ascends. Barotrauma injuries of descent include ear squeeze, tympanic membrane rupture, and sinus squeeze. It can affect both breath-hold divers and divers breathing underwater from a compressed gas source. Injuries of ascent include pulmonary barotrauma, which can result in an air embolism, pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum.
